Joel's testimonial

Joel Bettridge, age 32
Nationality: Canadian
Purpose of coming to Aarhus/course: Masters studies
Duration of stay: August 2007 – September 2009
1. What made you decide to come to Aarhus to study?
My girlfriend is Danish, school accepted me, the rest is history
2. How did you experience your first month here?
A few problems, no one knew where the tax office was, or where to get a CPR number, and once I got my scholarship it was really confusing, even for the people in charge of the scholarship, they didn’t know what was going on.
3. Is Denmark academically different to what you are used to? Level of teaching, methods, etc…
I’ve never done an MA, so can’t really compare the level. But the methods are more casual, not that much review, not enough lecture time, a lot of talking around the subject, instead of talking about the subject (hope that makes sense). But it may be how MAs are taught.
4. How would you characterise the Danish? Has it been easy for you to meet local Danes?
Danes are great, easy to meet them in class, little more difficult outside of class, but I didn’t try that hard.
5. Is it easy to be ‘foreign’ in Denmark?
Day to day routine, it is simple. When something out of the ordinary happens, like tax card/CPR number etc… it is pretty difficult, but not impossible.
6. Is there something/somewhere that you would recommend newcomers to experience?
Aalborg Karnival
7. Can you recommend any particular going-out/hanging-out places?
Sherlock Holmes, places by the River. Also, little local Pubs are nice (such as Hjorten).
